Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, popularly called KCR, is a politician of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

He is the Chief Minister of Telangana State

Chandrasekhar Rao was elected to the Telangana Assembly from Gajwel constituency. He also contested and won from the Medak Lok Sabha constituency in the 2014 elections. Chandrasekhar Rao is the President of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). Chandrasekhar Rao earlier served as cabinet minister for Labour and Employment.

In the 2014 elections, KCR contested from Gajwel Assembly seat and Medak Parliamentary seat.

Personal Profile

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao was born on February 17, 1954 at Chintamadaka village in Medak district. He holds a Masters degree in Telugu Literature. KCR is married to Shobha, who is the daughter of freedom fighter J.Keshava Rao from Kodurpaaka. He has two children. His son K Taraka Rama Rao and daughter K Kavita are both in active politics. K Taraka Rama Rao is an MLA representing Sircilla assembly constituency, while K Kavitha is an MP representing Nizamabad Parliamentary Constituency

Political Career

Stint in Telugu Desam Party: Chandrasekhar Rao first contested in the 1983 assembly elections which he has lost. He was first elected as Member of Legislative Assembly in 1985 from Telugu Desam Party. He achieved continuous success since then, never losing any election. During his stint in the Telugu Desam Party, KCR was as an important member in the party and has also served as Deputy Speaker in the Andhra Pradesh assembly. However, he quit the party later due to difference with the TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu.

Formation of Telangana Rashtra Samithi: An active supporter of a separate statehood of Telangana, Chandrasekhar Rao has formed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi party for the cause of Telangana state. He formed an alliance with the Congress party in 2004 and contested in the elections. Chandrasekhar Rao staged an indefinite hunger strike demanding the formation of Telangana state. He later ended his fast when the UPA Government said that it will initiate the process of formation of Telangana state. However, in a few days, the UPA Government backtracked its statement.
